Hotel Higgins Landing

An award winning eco resort on Stocking Island, Exuma, Bahamas

"A marvelous example of low-impact land and resource use...." The Bahamas Handbook

Before " green" was "gold", David and Carol Higgins recognized how lucky they were to have "landed" on beautiful Stocking Island. After many years of searching the tropics, a small classified advertisement and a hard working Bahamian real estate agent convinced them to consider Stocking Island.  No cars, no roads, and only 7 inhabitants, some only part year. But... no utilities.

Miles of beautiful white beaches, gin clear water, near shore reefs teeming with fish, blue holes, underwater caves, rare exotic orchids, living stromatolites; clearly this was a unique and special environment. The only right thing to do if one was to build here, was to develop a way to "live lightly on the land" in this special place.

Blessed with bright Bahamian sunshine year round, solar power was the natural choice.  Hotel Higgins Landing was the first to apply to the Bahamian government for approval of a photovoltaic solar electric system.    The need for fresh water could also be satisfied by nature, and cisterns were built to collect rainfall.  Traditional septic systems and sandmounds would have marred the natural terrain, thus gold medal award winning biological composting toilet systems were installed (again the first in the Bahamas.)

Construction started in 1992. All work was done by hand, no major equipment was used and much was learned, but after 3 years, Hotel Higgins Landing was ready for its first guests in time for Christmas 1995.  Two years later, in 1997, Islands Magazine recognized the achievement, naming Hotel Higgins Landing as the best ecotourism resort in the Bahamas and one of the four best in the Caribbean.
